The Tennessee Titans are making headlines with a shocking decision! In a dramatic move, they've fired head coach Brian Callahan after a disappointing 1-5 start to the season, marking the first coaching change in the NFL this year.
Chad Brinker, the Titans' president of football operations, revealed that the decision came after extensive discussions with the team's leadership. In a statement, Brinker acknowledged the team's struggles, stating, "We have not demonstrated sufficient growth." He emphasized the organization's commitment to building a winning program but admitted they had fallen short of their expectations.
The Titans swiftly appointed Mike McCoy as the interim coach, who has a mixed coaching record. McCoy previously coached the San Diego Chargers from 2013 to 2016, finishing with a 27-37 record and a 23-game losing streak before his dismissal. He also served as an offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2017 and the Arizona Cardinals in 2018.
Callahan's tenure was marked by a 4-19 record, including a 10-game losing streak. His firing is only the second mid-season coaching change for the Titans since their relocation to Nashville in 1997, following Ken Whisenhunt's dismissal in 2015. Whisenhunt also endured a 10-game skid during his tenure.
But the Titans' struggles run deeper. Since December 2022, the team has undergone significant personnel changes, including the firing of general managers Jon Robinson and Ran Carthon, and head coach Mike Vrabel. The Titans also hired and fired Carthon within a year, and brought in GM Mike Borgonzi in 2025.
The team had hoped for improvement under Callahan, especially with rookie quarterback Cam Ward. However, Callahan's play-calling duties were reassigned after a 0-3 start and offensive struggles. Despite the change, the Titans' offense has scored only 83 points in six games, averaging a mere 3.94 yards per play. This places them among the worst offensive performances in the past 20 seasons, alongside teams like the 2019 Jets and the 2018 Bills.
Callahan's winning percentage of .174 is one of the lowest among NFL coaches with at least 20 games coached since the 1970 merger. Only a few coaches, including Jim Ringo, Marty Mornhinweg, Chris Palmer, and Rod Dowhower, have lower winning percentages.
The Titans recognized the need for a rebuild and sought improvement during training camp. They've featured at least seven rookies in each game this season, led by Ward, the top draft pick. Callahan's expertise with quarterbacks, demonstrated by his work with Cincinnati's Joe Burrow, was a key factor in his hiring in January 2024.
However, Ward has been sacked 25 times this season, including two games with six sacks each, following a loss to the Raiders. This trend continues a pattern where teams firing coaches mid-season after selecting a quarterback with the No. 1 pick. Callahan joins a group of coaches who faced a similar fate, including Matt Eberflus, Frank Reich, and Urban Meyer.
